In thinking about gratitude, I can't help but think of the song Count Your Blessings by Johnson Oatman Jr.:
When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Refrain:
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.
For anyone who really doesn't think that they have much to be happy about, I challenge you to take a pen and paper and think long and hard about what you are truly grateful for. Perhaps you could hang this list somewhere where you will see it every day in order to remind you about all of the things that you already DO have so that you will not dwell so much on what you DO NOT have. We are much happier when we look for the silver lining in our lives, instead of focusing on the cloudy skies. And so, here is my list that I came up with of 25 things that I am grateful for.
